In The Last of the Sea Women, an unusual group of fierce warrior grandmothers is waging a spirited battle against huge ocean threats. Hanyo divers from South Korea’s Jeju Island, often referred to as real mermaids, are known for centuries of diving to the bottom of the ocean – without oxygen – in search of seafood for sustenance. Today, when most of them are in their 60s, 70s and 80s, their traditions and way of life are under immediate threat. But these fierce, cheerful and hardworking women do not give up, which is facilitated by the struggle of the younger generation to revive the way of life of their ancestors through social networks. This poignant documentary explores what drives Hanyo young and old, focusing on their strong friendship, sane independence and infectious sense of empowerment. It unfolds into an inspiring story about women who defy world powers to protect their beloved ocean, and inspires new generations. .
